Architect Domènech Sugrañes i Gras designed the Sol i Mar building in 1925, possibly the first block of summer flats in Catalonia, today protected as an Asset of Local Interest, both for its historic and architectural prominence.
The hotel business dates back to 1900, with the raising of the hotel Planas. In the 1920s, several well-off families started construction on their second homes right on the beach, the majority in a late Modernista style.
Tourist interest in Salou led to huge urban growth in the sixties, when many of the hotels and apartment buildings were built in the areas bordering the coast. The majority of these buildings were remodelled and adapted to market trends in recent years.

Family Tourism Destination certification has been awarded to 14 hotels, 7 apartment-hotels, 1 tourist apartments and 1 campground.
