The wharf and breakwater protected fishermen’s boats until the mid-20th century. The wharf was built at the beginning of the 19th century. The Fishermen’s Monument is located at the site where boats were once moored. It was created by Ramon Ferran and pays homage and testimony to the city’s seafaring past. The memorial was erected in 1990 by popular subscription.
This memorial evokes the historic date of 5 September 1229, when the Catalan fleet commanded by King Jaume I set sail from this point to conquer Majorca, which was held at that time by the Arabs. The sculpture is comprised of a sailboat with the stone figures of King Jaume I and his horse, with the horse’s head covered in gold leaf. The monument, which towers over Salou’s main promenade, was unveiled on 28 November 1965, and is the work of architect Salvador Ripoll and sculptor Lluís Maria Saumells.
This area is called Pilons, which means ‘bollards’ in English. This name comes from the fact that fishermen used to moor their boats to the many bollards in the area. Since 1998 it has a sculpture by Antoni Rosselló Til, in the shape of a sail that commemorates Salou’s history as a fishing village. From this spot you can enjoy a breathtaking view of the coast and spectacular sunsets.
