Birds

Bosc Gran and Pla de Maset are home to a great diversity of birds from both woodland and open habitats. This mosaic of pine forests, clearings and sandy areas provides shelter, food and breeding sites for many species characteristic of the Mediterranean coast.

Among the most common are the tits, small but highly active and colourful birds. Several species can be found here, including the great tit (Parus major), crested tit (Lophophanes cristatus), coal tit (Periparus ater) and long-tailed tit (Aegithalos caudatus). The great tit is easily recognised by the distinctive black stripe running down its bright yellow breast, particularly prominent in males. It can often be seen foraging close to the ground or among the lower layers of the woodland.

Their lively and varied songs form an important part of the forest’s soundscape. Since ancient times, people have interpreted these calls in different ways. One traditional interpretation hears the phrase “ve l’estiu, ve l’estiu” (“summer is coming, summer is coming”), announcing the arrival of the warmer months.
