Among the woodland birds, the short-toed treecreeper (Certhia brachydactyla) is particularly noteworthy. Small and discreet, its earth-toned plumage provides excellent camouflage against tree bark. It can often be seen climbing rapidly up trunks and branches in search of food. Its thin, high-pitched song has inspired popular interpretations associated with phrases such as “arrapa’t petit” and “arrapa’t petuiit”. According to local tradition, the call, which can sound like the words “hold on, little one” in Catalan, is imagined as a parent treecreeper warning its chick not to fall from the trunk.
