In Catalonia, the mas is a fundamental element of rural history and of the Catalan landscape. The term refers both to the farmhouse itself and to the entire agricultural holding associated with it. This includes cultivated land, kitchen gardens, stables, haylofts, animal pens, storage buildings and all the structures required for life and work in the countryside.
A maset is generally a smaller or more modest version of a mas, often associated with a larger principal holding or consisting of a more compact rural dwelling. Particularly in southern Catalonia, the term is also used for country properties intended for family leisure and a connection with the land, often surrounded by small plots of cultivation or fruit trees.
In this case, the maset was also historically known as the Caseta del Cendra, a name that has been documented since at least the beginning of the twentieth century.
