Salou, capital of Catalan culture 2025
The Catalan Capital of Culture initiative, which includes the entire Catalan linguistic and cultural sphere, aims to increase the dissemination and prestige of the Catalan language and culture, as well as to strengthen cultural cohesion between Catalan-speaking territories. With Salou as the Catalan Capital of Culture 2025, the city is preparing for an intense and ambitious year that will strengthen the link with Catalan culture and turn the municipality into a recognised cultural destination.
TRADITIONS AND EVENTS
Salou, capital of the Costa Daurada, is a destination for beaches, sports and gastronomy, but also for culture, thanks to events such as the Winter Festival and the Nits Daurades. Our city hosts historic events, such as the Festival of 30 October – which commemorates the Segregation of Salou – or the Squid Festival, the Calada de las Mallas de Sant Pere and the procession of the Mare de Déu on 15 August inspired by the fishing tradition. Here you can consult the entire annual calendar of events.
The Salou Network of Traditional Catalan Culture brings together entities and associations that promote traditional elements and street entertainment. On October 30, on the occasion of the Festival of Segregation in Salou, all the elements come out to parade.
In addition, Salou has traditional and popular elements that you can find at the city's festivals, such as the Giants of Salou (kings Jaume I and Violant) created in 1987, the pair of fishermen (Ramon and Maria del Mar), a pair of Harlequins, Gralleta (a small giant), Xaloc (a giant that transforms into a fire element), and Pentabrut and Negrito.
The events of the Seguici and the Parade are completed by elements such as the Ball de Bastons, eight Dwarves and the Mulassa (Sal-i-Ou Association) and the fire show of the Diables Maleïts and the Witches Latemó, as well as the sardana group "Contrapunt d'Onades". In addition, the sound of the Grallers "La Tarota" has been accompanying the procession, the dances, the bestiary and the festive elements for 25 years.
Organisations such as the Grup Esplai Salou (in charge of La Morena), Salou Teatre and the Grup de Dones complete an impressive cultural and festive offering.
CULTURE: MONUMENTS AND SCULPTURES
Salou has several monuments and sculptures scattered around the town. All of them tell a story linked to the town itself.
HISTORY
The exceptional conditions of the natural harbour and the coastal strip of the municipality have marked the history of Salou.
